“Oldest Bar Owner Celebrates 97th Birthday with Pints”

Date:

Pub landlord Frank Collins recently celebrated his 97th birthday with a few pints, proudly claiming the title of the oldest bar owner in the country. Taking over the family business at 68, Frank expressed his joy in serving behind the bar, stating that he will continue as long as he enjoys it and appreciates the company.

The Dog & Partridge in Sowood, West Yorkshire, has been in the Collins family for generations. After Frank’s father’s untimely death in 1956, his mother Mabel took charge, continuing the pub’s legacy of strong landladies. When Mabel moved to a care home in 1997, Frank took over the reins after a humorous exchange with Inspector Smith.

Before stepping into the pub business full-time, Frank had a career in the textile industry. Despite the career shift, he has no regrets and finds contentment in pub life, which has been his lifelong environment. Over the years, he has received recognition for his exceptional service, including an award from Camra.

Frank recently marked his 97th birthday with a modest celebration and, true to form, a round of drinks for his guests. Reflecting on his long-standing connection to the pub, he fondly recalled assisting his father from a young age and even being left in charge at 16 during his parents’ absence.
