A stadium initially constructed for Olympic athletes has been repurposed as an emergency shelter to accommodate dogs rescued from wildfires in Greece.
Intense dry weather conditions and strong winds reaching up to 78mph have caused wildfires to spread throughout the Attica region surrounding Athens.
Despite ongoing efforts by hundreds of firefighters to combat the fires, significant damage has been reported in the villages of Porto Germeno and Psatha where homes have been destroyed.
Volunteers at the Megara Olympians Municipal Stadium have transformed a running track into a temporary refuge for dogs affected by the disaster. These rescued dogs are being provided with food, water, and much-needed rest.
Over 110 animals, including both strays and those with collars indicating ownership, have found shelter at the stadium since the wildfires erupted. Veterinarians are assessing each dog for injuries or signs of illness upon their arrival.
Wildlife charities have expressed concern over the impact of the fires on Greece’s wild animals, such as wild horses and deer, whose habitats have been devastated.
Recent data revealed that the Attica region has lost 42% of its forests to wildfires over the past decade. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of supporting the natural regeneration process of burned forests, particularly those comprising Aleppo pine.
Authorities have reported the arrest of 33 individuals across Greece for starting fires between June 29 and August 2, with most cases attributed to negligence related to farm activities like welding. Aerial resources, including planes and helicopters, are being utilized to contain the fires when weather conditions permit.
Costas Tsingas, the head of the Greek Firefighters Association, stated that efforts are focused on improving conditions throughout the day due to the high fire risk in the area.
