Horrified parents expressed outrage over what they described as a significant failure that allowed a child predator to be employed at nurseries where their young children attended.
Nathan Bennett, 30, was convicted of multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration, involving five children aged two and three at the Partou King Street nursery in Bristol. Distressed parents with children at the nurseries where Bennett worked emphasized the urgent need for immediate and effective reforms to safeguard children from dangerous individuals.
Concerned parents from a nursery where Bennett worked pointed out clear warning signs that should have raised concerns about the offender. Following Bennett’s trial, a group of devastated parents came together and initiated a petition demanding nursery safeguarding reforms.
Reflecting on the situation, two parents stressed that Bennett should have been identified as a high-risk individual even before his criminal acts were discovered. The revelation of Bennett’s misconduct occurred when nursery manager Victoria Tutton observed CCTV footage showing him inappropriately touching a child in February 2025.
Upon notification to the authorities, Bennett was arrested, and the Partou King Street nursery was shut down. Parents lamented that without CCTV surveillance, Bennett might have continued his offenses unchecked. Consequently, they are advocating for mandatory CCTV installation in all nurseries to enhance child safety.
In their petition, parents highlighted the need for comprehensive reforms in nursery safeguarding measures, including enhanced background checks, improved information sharing among nurseries, greater parental involvement in raising concerns, mandatory CCTV usage, stringent hiring processes, increased qualifications for staff, independent evaluations of staffing decisions, increased funding for early childhood settings, and home visits as part of enhanced safeguarding protocols.
The petition emphasized that the failure to prevent Bennett’s actions was not an isolated incident but a systemic breakdown. It called for proactive, evidence-based, and unwavering safeguarding practices to ensure children’s safety is not compromised by insufficient checks or inadequate staff resources.
During the trial at Bristol Crown Court, it was revealed that Bennett began working at the nursery in July 2024. Witnesses testified that he exhibited concerning behaviors such as prolonged physical contact with children, wearing inappropriate attire, and displaying possessiveness towards certain toddlers and their parents.
Temporary Detective Inspector Lucy Ford from Avon and Somerset Police commented on the case, expressing the distress and challenges involved in investigating offenses against very young children by someone entrusted with their care.
The King Street Day Nursery and Pre-School ceased operations in December following Bennett’s actions, although Partou continues to operate multiple nurseries in Bristol and across the UK. A spokesperson for Partou stated that they had enhanced their safeguarding protocols after an independent review, aiming to better protect all children under their care based on the review’s recommendations.
