More than 100 former patients of a surgeon have stepped forward for an investigation into his practices, as revealed by the Sunday Mirror. Leslie Irwin is under scrutiny with a “patient recall notice” at a private hospital, while the NHS is collaborating with the Royal College of Surgeons to identify patients requiring review.
Our investigation found that over 100 of Irwin’s past patients have sought legal advice in an unprecedented wave. One individual expressed admiration for Irwin, likening him to a father figure. David Render, aged 64, has been enduring constant pain following multiple surgeries on his wrists, elbows, and fingers by Irwin between 2018 and 2022. Incidents included screws being left protruding from David’s fingers after surgery, necessitating urgent removal.
David initially sought treatment for wrist injuries from a fall in 2017 and was referred to Irwin by his previous surgeon. The resulting surgeries left David with ongoing pain, hindering his daily activities and contributing to the breakdown of his marriage. Another patient, Rebecca Williams, underwent over 20 procedures by Irwin, resulting in lasting wrist and arm damage. She has been living in persistent pain and developed arthritis, previously relying on prescription tramadol.
John Lowther, a clinical negligence solicitor at Slater and Gordon, leading investigations into Irwin, highlighted the extraordinary number of former patients coming forward with alarming concerns about multiple surgeries and poor outcomes. Irwin’s wife, a retired nurse, refuted the allegations against her husband, emphasizing his ethical standards. Medical negligence lawyers noted an unprecedented influx of former patients since the case surfaced, with Slater and Gordon supporting affected individuals in seeking answers and redress.
A spokesperson from Spire Washington Hospital stated ongoing reviews of procedures for a specific group of Irwin’s patients. South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is coordinating with Spire on patient concerns related to Irwin, seeking support from the Royal College of Surgeons. Former patients are encouraged to contact the Trust or Spire for assistance and information.
