Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly considering a potential public inquiry into the UK activities of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to statements from victims minister Alex Davies-Jones. Davies-Jones mentioned that Burnham has agreed to meet with Epstein’s victims and is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Additionally, there is a review underway regarding a possible inquiry into the alleged wrongdoings of former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.
Allegations of sexual misconduct against Al Fayed date back to 1977, with over 400 claims made against him up until 2014, including sexual assault, rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating at least 156 victims who have come forward, with 21 cases reported prior to Al Fayed’s passing in 2023 at the age of 94.
When asked about the possibility of a public inquiry, Davies-Jones stated that they are actively exploring the option and are also considering the survivors of the Harrods incidents. She emphasized that Burnham is fully engaged in the process and is committed to meeting with victims to assess the available information and determine appropriate actions.
Davies-Jones, who had briefly resigned as justice minister citing a lack of decisive action by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, reinstated her role under Burnham’s administration. She highlighted that Burnham had given her assurances of prioritizing the needs of victims before joining his government.
In a BBC interview, Davies-Jones disclosed that Burnham had agreed to meet with Epstein’s victims and had stayed connected with them during his transition to Prime Minister. She expressed confidence in Burnham’s dedication to implementing systemic changes to support all victims, including those affected by Epstein, Harrods incidents, and grooming gangs.
A survivor of Epstein, Lisa Phillips, shared her hopes for a meeting with Burnham to signal a new era where survivors are heard, lessons are learned, accountability is upheld, and enduring reforms safeguard future generations.
