A police chief has accused a long-standing Conservative Member of Parliament of providing inaccurate information to the Parliament regarding his force’s inquiry into Lucy Letby, the nurse convicted of multiple murders. The accusation came after Sir David Davis criticized the police investigation, alleging deviations from professional standards. The police strongly denied these claims.
Chief Constable Mark Roberts has called for Sir David to rectify his numerous errors and misleading statements, emphasizing that the facts do not support his narrative. Roberts highlighted that the police thoroughly investigated all evidence, leaving no stone unturned, and took extensive measures before naming Letby as a suspect.
Letby, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of infants at a hospital, has persistently professed her innocence and is seeking a third appeal. The police have reaffirmed their confidence in the investigation’s integrity and disputed Sir David’s assertions of misconduct, insisting that due legal processes were diligently followed.
Roberts refuted Sir David’s allegations of biased investigative practices and failure to adhere to expert guidelines. He clarified that multiple independent medical experts, vetted by authorities, provided testimony during Letby’s trial, with no reliance on statistical evidence. Roberts emphasized that the investigation strictly adhered to legal protocols and guidelines on disclosure.
Letby will not face additional charges related to other infant deaths under investigation, as confirmed earlier this year. Her legal team has submitted new medical evidence challenging the prosecution’s case to the Criminal Cases Review Commission. Additionally, reports questioning the reliability of certain medical tests have been forwarded to the commission.
The Conservative MP, Sir David, has not yet responded to the recent developments.
