A shocking incident unfolded as a police officer was viciously attacked with a knife while intervening to protect his colleague during a routine traffic stop. The distressing altercation was captured on video.
Sergeant Tim Ansell of Greater Manchester Police was assaulted by a hooded assailant identified as Jacob Brown, 27, on July 26, 2023, in Whalley Range. Brown unexpectedly attacked Sergeant Foster before turning on Ansell, leaving him with severe injuries.
Footage from a body camera captured the moment Ansell, despite being injured, bravely shielded his colleague from further harm. He sustained multiple stab wounds to his neck, arm, and body during the harrowing incident.
Subsequently, Ansell managed to wrestle control of the attacker, preventing additional harm. Another officer, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, used a Taser to subdue Brown, leading to his arrest.
In recognition of their valor, all three officers were honored with awards for bravery, including the Chief Constable’s Annual Bravery Awards, the John Egerton Bravery Award from GMP’s Police Federation, and the North West Bravery Award.
Sergeant Ansell was further distinguished with the King’s Commendation for Bravery, presented at St. James’ Palace in London on March 25.
The police force commended the officers for their swift actions, which not only saved each other but also prevented harm to the public.
Jacob Brown, armed with a craft knife, was sentenced in April 2024 to an indefinite hospital order after pleading guilty to attempted murder and three counts of wounding with intent, despite having no connection to the initial incident.
