Pregnant Woman Jumps from Building, Baby Survives

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded as a pregnant woman, Emma Atkinson, fell from a 10-story building, uttering the words “I’m off” before the plunge. Despite the fall, her baby miraculously survived the ordeal. An inquest revealed that Emma Atkinson, a mother of five, intentionally propelled herself out of the window at Shakespeare Towers in Leeds, where her daughter was successfully delivered within 30 minutes of the incident on October 22, 2024.

The inquest heard that Emma, who was over seven months pregnant, had gone to visit her father on the ninth floor of the building. Her father recounted that Emma sat by the window, removed the safety catches, and opened it fully, seemingly seeking fresh air despite the cold weather. Moments later, she made the fateful decision to jump out of the window, leading to her tragic demise.

Investigations by West Yorkshire Police ruled out any third-party involvement or suspicious circumstances in Emma’s death. It was noted that she had a history of mental health struggles and was anxious about potential legal repercussions before her death. The coroner, Naomi McLoughlin, concluded that while Emma’s act was self-inflicted, the exact intent behind it could not be conclusively determined.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the incident, it was emphasized that Emma Atkinson was a cherished individual, deeply loved by those around her. For those seeking mental health support, contact the Samaritans on 116 123, email at jo@samaritans.org, or visit samaritans.org for assistance.
