“Prince Harry Reconsiders UK Visit Amid Police Protection Denial”

Date:

Prince Harry is reportedly reconsidering his plans to bring Meghan Markle and their children to the UK for a visit after their request for police protection was turned down. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had intended to travel to the UK next month to participate in events leading up to Harry’s 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. They had planned to bring their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, on this trip, marking their first visit to the UK as a family in four years.

Prince Harry’s team had formally requested taxpayer-funded security from the police for this visit but were informed on Friday that their request had been denied. The family was scheduled to visit the UK in early July and stay for a week, with this trip being Lilibet’s first visit to the country. Reports suggest that Harry, who had previously expressed concerns about the safety of the UK for his family, had now accepted an offer to stay at a royal residence, likely Buckingham Palace.

In a change of decision from previous trips, which saw him decline offers to stay at royal residences, Prince Harry’s current visit plans are uncertain as he reevaluates bringing Meghan and the children. His police protection was revoked in 2022 when the couple left the royal family and moved to the US. The Mirror reported that Harry had been frustrated with the delay in reviewing his security request, which had taken more than six months. Sources indicated that the prince was upset by the security rejection, especially so close to their intended departure.

A source close to the Duke mentioned that the prolonged process had led Harry to adjust his plans, ultimately accepting the offer to stay at a royal residence for this trip. Another source, as reported by The Times, stated that Harry’s primary wish was for his children to see their grandfather but was now contemplating the safety aspect of the visit.

Regarding security arrangements, a government spokesperson emphasized the UK’s rigorous and proportionate protective security system, stating the policy of not disclosing detailed information to maintain integrity and individual security. The Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) makes security decisions on behalf of the government, with the Home Secretary not involved in individual choices. The couple had purportedly planned various family activities during the visit, including a visit to Princess Diana’s grave at Althorp House.
