The Princess Royal expressed her strong interest in the popular 90s TV show “Gladiators” while presenting an MBE to Kate Staples at Windsor Castle. Staples, a former British pole vaulter known as Zodiac on the show, shared that Princess Anne was captivated by her involvement in the program and had followed the series previously. The athlete, now a Member of The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire, discussed her remarkable journey, including a neck injury sustained during Gladiators that ended her competitive career.
Staples, who set numerous records during her sports career, highlighted the importance of promoting youth participation in athletics during her conversation with Princess Anne. The Princess, an accomplished equestrian who competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and serves on the International Olympic Committee, emphasized the significance of encouraging children to engage in sports.
Currently, Staples focuses on collaborating with schools and communities to enhance grassroots athletics for youngsters through her Community Interest Company (CIC) Athletes For All. The initiative aims to raise funds to support underprivileged children and establish new academies to utilize existing athletic facilities efficiently. Staples emphasized the positive impact of creating a safe and inclusive community space for families to engage in sports activities.
