A woman described as “out of control” attacked her neighbor using a crutch after destroying a wisteria plant. Atidel Boutara Cook was found guilty of criminal damage and assaulting her upstairs neighbor, Pei Wong, on December 17 last year. The incident unfolded at a Victorian house in Stanhope Gardens, Tottenham, where Ms. Wong and her husband, Louis Scott, reside on the upper floor while Boutara Cook lives in the ground floor flat.
The conflict arose when Ms. Wong’s husband witnessed Boutara Cook cutting down the wisteria and other plants in the front garden. Despite minimal prior interaction over two decades of being neighbors, the couple confronted Boutara Cook, with Ms. Wong recording the encounter on her phone. The situation escalated as Boutara Cook began shouting, grabbed the phone, and struck Ms. Wong multiple times with her crutch.
During the trial, evidence including a video from Ms. Wong’s phone captured the chaotic scene outside the property. District Judge Oliver noted the sounds in the footage were consistent with the use of a crutch as a weapon. Ms. Wong refuted claims that she and her husband had initiated the altercation, stating that Boutara Cook had attacked her unprovoked.
Boutara Cook argued that she had cut the wisteria due to it being dead and impacting the air quality in her flat. She claimed ownership of the plant due to a financial contribution made to the couple in the past. However, the court established that Boutara Cook had not verified her right to remove the plant and was unaware of the necessary permissions.
Ultimately, the judge found Boutara Cook guilty of assaulting Ms. Wong and dismissed her claims as untruthful. He instructed both parties to maintain distance from each other to prevent further conflicts. Boutara Cook, who appeared in court with a red walking frame, was granted conditional bail until the sentencing scheduled for May 6 at the same court.
