Millions of Gmail users are receiving an alert deemed ‘important,’ sparking concerns over AI scanning emails. American TV personality and entrepreneur Lori Greiner recently raised awareness via Instagram about potential privacy issues related to Google’s new AI smart features. Despite Google’s assurance that the AI does not read messages for personal use, Greiner urged Gmail users not to overlook the warning.
To disable the AI scanning, users can quickly opt out by following some simple steps. By accessing Settings and selecting “see all settings,” users can navigate to the “Smart features” section and disable them in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Additionally, unchecking boxes for Workspace and other products under “Manage Workspace Smart Features” can further restrict data usage for AI.
Google emphasizes that personal data is secure and inaccessible to its team or third parties. The tech giant clarifies that AI models like Gemini are only granted limited access to perform specific tasks within Gmail and do not retain any user data. Despite Google’s assurances, users wary of AI intrusion can easily deactivate smart features in their Gmail settings.
By taking these steps, Gmail users can ensure their privacy and data security while using the platform.
