“Probe Launched: Baby Formula Linked to Toxin Poisoning”

Date:

An investigation is underway regarding 36 cases where children became sick after consuming baby formula, possibly due to toxin poisoning.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has initiated a probe into children who exhibited symptoms consistent with cereulide toxin poisoning after consuming specific batches of formula. This action follows Nestlé’s precautionary recall of several batches of 12 SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula, prompted by concerns of cereulide toxin contamination.

Reports received by the UKHSA and its partners include 24 cases in England, seven in Scotland, three in Wales, one in Northern Ireland, and one from the Crown Dependencies. Cereulide toxin, produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria, can contaminate foods like rice, pasta, and dairy products. The toxin is heat-stable, remaining active even after cooking or preparation, posing a risk to infants.

Symptoms of cereulide poisoning include sudden vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain within 30 minutes to six hours of ingestion. Infants may exhibit signs such as persistent crying, refusal to feed, lethargy, and dehydration. Immediate medical attention is crucial if an infant shows severe symptoms after consuming contaminated formula.

Treatment focuses on supporting the infant through symptom management, fluid replacement, and close monitoring by healthcare professionals. While most cases resolve without medical intervention, early diagnosis is essential in severe instances.
