“Protests Greet Royal Family at Commonwealth Day Service”

Date:

The Commonwealth Day service was met with vocal protests as the Royal Family arrived at Westminster Abbey today. Demonstrators from anti-monarchy group Republic gathered outside the abbey, chanting phrases like “Not my King” and “Charlie, Charlie, time to go.” Despite the protestors’ voices, they were countered by boos from other attendees.

The bells of the Abbey rang loud, drowning out the protesters as the royals made their public appearance for the first time since former Prince Andrew’s arrest. The King and Queen, followed by the Prince and Princess of Wales, joined the annual event celebrating the 56 nations of the Commonwealth.

In his message within the event program, the King emphasized the importance of the Commonwealth as a platform for open discussions to enhance the lives of billions in an increasingly divided world. As the head of the Commonwealth, Charles highlighted the potential for prosperous trade partnerships within the institution.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other government officials, along with High Commissioners and young individuals, attended the event. Notable figures like Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Oti Mabuse also participated, each contributing in their unique way.

Charles emphasized the Commonwealth’s role in promoting trade partnerships and addressing environmental challenges in his annual message to the member nations. The Commonwealth will convene its biennial meeting in Antigua and Barbuda this year, focusing on accelerating partnerships and investments for a prosperous future.

The service featured various artistic performances, including the premiere of the Commonwealth Symphony and a dance collaboration between the Royal Ballet School and Sapnay Entertainments. The event aimed to celebrate collaboration as a fundamental strength of the Commonwealth nations, with participants from diverse backgrounds coming together in unity.
