Public Funds Cover Convicted Killer’s Eco-Friendly Funeral

Date:

Taxpayers will cover the £2,000 expenses for the funeral of Ian Huntley, the convicted killer of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. Huntley was cremated in an environmentally friendly coffin at a service without any attendees, all funded by public money.

The Ministry of Justice spent nearly £2,000 on Huntley’s funeral arrangements, which included professional services, body transportation, a cremation casket, and a jute natural coffin. The ministry also disclosed costs for staff attendance and supervision.

Despite objections from some, the Ministry of Justice routinely provides financial assistance for prisoners’ funerals, with up to £3,000 allocated for such expenses. Huntley was laid to rest in a biodegradable jute coffin, chosen for its minimal environmental impact and cost-effectiveness.

Following Huntley’s death, his ashes will be given to his mother, Lynda Richards. Huntley, a former school caretaker, was convicted in 2003 for the murders of Holly and Jessica in Cambridgeshire and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Inmate Anthony Russell, aged 43, has been charged with Huntley’s murder.
