Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated a severe onslaught on Ukraine, unleashing a barrage of missiles and drones on Kyiv’s civilians, resulting in the death of at least 17 people. The retaliatory strikes, aimed at Ukrainian troops disrupting Russian oil and gas supplies, have left numerous individuals injured and trapped beneath the debris of demolished buildings, with thick black smoke engulfing the beleaguered capital.
Prior to the assault, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky forewarned the populace of an imminent major attack by Russia. Zelensky underscored Putin’s prolonged planning for a substantial strike on Ukraine, emphasizing the imminent danger faced by the country.
Overnight, nearly 600 aerial weapons, including attack and decoy drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, and advanced hypersonic weapons, targeted Kyiv, igniting fires and chaos across the city. This assault marked one of the most brutal episodes inflicted by Russia on Kyiv since the conflict began over four years ago.
Despite the strategic insignificance of targeting civilians, Putin’s tactic of instilling fear and horror remains consistent. However, this approach seems to be backfiring, as it has bolstered Ukrainian resilience and intensified their commitment to resisting the Russian aggression. With Russia facing setbacks in various aspects such as economic downturn, slow progress, and declining morale, Putin appears increasingly desperate as the tide of the war turns against him.
In response to Russian aggression, Ukraine has conducted long-range missile and drone strikes on key Russian energy facilities, causing significant disruptions and shortages in Russia’s fuel supply chain and severely impacting its war economy. Notably, Ukrainian forces targeted a major oil refinery in Kstovo, damaging vital infrastructure and impeding Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign in Ukraine.
Furthermore, an analysis by the International Institute for Strategic Studies has documented a series of Russian incursions into NATO territories over the past 15 months, resulting in disruptions to civilian air travel and compromising the security of critical military installations. The study highlights the prevalence of Russian drone sightings over sensitive locations, underscoring the challenges posed by these incursions to European security.
The incidents of drone intrusions have been particularly alarming, with several NATO countries, including Germany, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, and Norway, reporting incursions over military and civilian sites. These violations have raised concerns about the safety and integrity of airspace in the region, with significant incidents occurring near key military installations, such as the US nuclear weapons facility in Belgium.
