Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable 70-year reign exemplified her commitment to the adage “I have to be seen to be believed.” The largest-ever exhibition of her fashion legacy, titled “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style,” debuts at Buckingham Palace tomorrow, featuring over 300 pieces, including dresses, hats, shoes, handbags, and even a rare pair of trousers from the former monarch, with nearly half of them being unveiled to the public for the first time.
The Mirror provided a sneak peek of the exhibition, coinciding with the upcoming centenary of her birth, showcasing her transformation from a young princess to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. The exhibit delves into how fashion became a key tool of communication for her, with practicality being paramount in her outfit choices.
Curator Caroline de Guitaut meticulously curated the show over 18 months, sifting through thousands of items now under the care of the Royal Collection of Trust following the Queen’s passing in September 2022. According to de Guitaut, the Queen had a clear sense of style that aligned with her duties, emphasizing practicality and functionality over fleeting fashion trends.
“Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” will be on display at the King’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace from April 10 to October 18. The exhibition features an array of clothing and accessories, including the late Queen’s iconic evening dresses from state visits, diplomatic attire worn on significant global engagements, and rare pieces like her wedding dress and Coronation gown. Jewels, hats, handbags, and shoes are also part of this grand display of Queen Elizabeth II’s enduring fashion legacy.
