“Reckless Driver Deliberately Strikes Friend in Shocking Video”

Date:

Shocking video footage captures the moment a reckless driver intentionally struck his close friend while driving recklessly down a street as part of a dangerous game. Mehmet Celik, 24, collided with Thomas Rees when he was supposed to pick him up after a night out, causing Rees to sustain a severe brain injury.

Photographs presented in court depicted the aftermath of the incident, showing Rees lying on the ground following the collision in Swansea, south Wales. The court was informed that Celik and Rees had been lifelong friends, sharing a history of attending school and university together.

Rees, 23, had contacted Celik for a ride home around 1 am after a night out. The prosecution stated that Celik sped past their meeting point and executed a reckless U-turn at a wide junction. Unfortunately, at the same time, Rees was crossing the road to enter Celik’s car, resulting in the collision.

The impact of the collision was so forceful that Mr. Rees lost his shoes, according to the prosecutor. Passersby, including Celik himself, rushed to aid Rees, who was then airlifted to the hospital. Subsequently, it was revealed that Rees suffered severe injuries, including brain bleeding, a lung blood clot, a broken breastbone, and a fractured calf bone, necessitating a lengthy hospital stay.

An investigation by the police determined that Celik was driving at 36mph on the opposite side of the road in a 20mph zone, causing substantial damage to his car in the crash. Celik pleaded guilty to causing serious injury due to dangerous driving.

In a victim impact statement, it was stated that Rees’ recovery had been arduous and emotionally distressing, significantly altering his life due to his new limitations.

During the sentencing hearing, David Singh, representing Celik, acknowledged Celik’s lack of judgment and expressed remorse for the consequences. The judge, Geraint Walters, remarked on the tragic turn of events between two former friends, cautioning against reckless driving behaviors and emphasizing the seriousness of the incident.

Celik received an 18-month suspended sentence for dangerous driving, a four-month nightly curfew, 300 hours of unpaid work, and a two-year driving ban as part of his punishment.
