“Reckless Driver Fatally Strikes Pedestrian on Rush to Mom’s Tea”

Date:

A man drove recklessly and fatally struck an 81-year-old pedestrian named James Atkinson while rushing to his mom’s house for tea. The tragic incident occurred when David Brown, speeding in his BMW, collided with Atkinson, who was heading to band practice. Atkinson sustained severe injuries and passed away in the hospital two days later.

After the collision, Brown initially fled the scene but his mother later brought him back to face the consequences. Brown, a resident of Tranmere, Wirral, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. He admitted to failing to stop after the accident and was sentenced to four years in prison.

During the trial, it was revealed that Brown was driving at speeds higher than the limit, overtaking other vehicles, before striking Atkinson. Despite claiming he didn’t see the pedestrian due to dark conditions, investigations showed he was driving between 39 and 42mph. Brown, showing remorse and tearful in court, was also banned from driving for seven years.

The judge emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the avoidable nature of the collision had Brown been more attentive and responsible behind the wheel. Brown’s denial of guilt and lack of full recognition of the impact of his actions were noted during the sentencing. He will need to pass an extended driving test before regaining his driving privileges after the ban period.
