Culture, Media, and Sport Secretary Lisa Nandy strongly rebuked Reform, stating that they should stay away from injecting their divisive politics into the national sport. Braverman, who recently switched from the Conservatives to Reform, urged FA CEO Mark Bullingham to abandon the diversity target in a formal letter. In response, Labour MP Stella Creasy highlighted the importance of not overlooking talent in football coaching, especially for the England men’s team, and praised initiatives like the FA’s diversity targets for preventing such oversights.
Labour MP Rachael Maskell echoed the sentiment, expressing shock at Braverman’s failure to recognize the significance of diversity in sports, particularly in creating opportunities for individuals from minority communities. Maskell welcomed the FA’s efforts to address career obstacles faced by many from minority backgrounds, emphasizing that promoting diversity in sports is crucial for broadening the talent pool.
The FA’s plan to have a quarter of coaches from diverse ethnic backgrounds by 2028, with a stretch goal of 30%, was part of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategy. Reform’s Braverman emphasized the importance of eradicating racism in football but criticized the FA’s approach, arguing that the diversity strategy fosters division and prioritizes quotas over merit and teamwork.
A recent report by the Black Footballers Partnership noted a slight increase in black employees holding management positions within football, indicating progress in diversity efforts. Kick It Out continues to advocate for the Independent Football Regulator to enforce inclusive practices within clubs as part of their governance codes under the licensing system.
