Renowned mountaineer and ex-Royal Marines soldier Nirmal Purja has passed away in Pakistan due to an avalanche. His company, Elite Exped, confirmed the tragic incident during an expedition on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th highest mountain. The avalanche occurred around midday on Thursday, claiming Mr. Purja’s life and those of other expedition members.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Elite Exped expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Nirmal Purja, as well as his climbing partners Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa. The company extended condolences to their families and urged respect for their privacy during this grieving period.
Pakistani authorities recovered the bodies of three other climbers, including American Mallory Geis, Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy from Oman, and Pur Bahadur Gurung from Nepal. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah also confirmed the tragic deaths of six Nepalese and four foreign climbers, emphasizing their courage and contributions to mountaineering.
Bear Grylls, a British adventurer, paid tribute to Purja for his remarkable spirit and unique personality. Purja had collaborated with Spencer Matthews, a former reality TV star, on a mission to recover the body of Matthews’ brother, Michael, who vanished on Everest in 1999. This expedition was documented in the film “Finding Michael,” released in 2023.
Nirmal Purja gained global recognition in 2019 for completing the ascent of all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters within 189 days, shattering the previous record. His extraordinary feat was featured in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Besides his mountaineering achievements, Purja served in the British military, receiving an MBE from the Queen in 2018 for his high-altitude mountaineering accomplishments.
Known as a cold weather warfare expert, Purja made history as the first Gurkha to summit Everest while in the British military. His daring rescue of a stranded climber in the “Everest death zone” showcased his bravery and selflessness in the face of extreme challenges.
