A man attacked Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis by spraying an unknown substance on her, amidst heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement. This incident occurred shortly after a nurse and mother of three were fatally shot by federal agents earlier in the month.
The assailant was immediately subdued by onlookers after the assault on Tuesday, January 27. Witnesses were shocked by the attack, with one attendee exclaiming that the man had sprayed something on Omar. The attacker, wearing a black jacket and holding a syringe, was swiftly restrained with his arms secured behind his back.
The assault took place right after Omar called for the disbandment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and demanded the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, stating that ICE could not be reformed.
Minneapolis police reported that the man used a syringe to spray an unidentified liquid at Omar. He was promptly apprehended and taken to county jail on charges of third-degree assault. Forensic experts were dispatched to the scene to investigate the matter.
Despite the attack, Omar remained undeterred and continued with the town hall once the perpetrator was removed. Journalists noted a strong, vinegar-like smell in the air post-incident. Omar, after a medical check-up, reassured her well-being, affirming her resilience against intimidation.
Criticism towards Omar has escalated, with President Trump referring to her as “garbage” during a recent Cabinet meeting. Trump’s disparaging comments towards Omar have fueled tension, with no response from The White House at the time of reporting.
Politicians from both sides of the aisle condemned the attack on Omar, emphasizing that physical violence against elected officials is unacceptable. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed relief that Omar was unharmed and commended the swift police response, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior in the city.
The assault on Omar comes in the wake of a similar incident where a man allegedly struck US Rep. Maxwell Frost at the Sundance Film Festival. Threats and attacks on members of Congress have been on the rise, with data from the U.S. Capitol Police showing a spike in threatening behavior following the January 6 Capitol attack in 2021.
The escalating hostility towards lawmakers has influenced some MPs’ decisions not to seek re-election. Omar, in particular, has been a frequent target of hostile rhetoric and personal attacks from Trump and other Republican figures.
