Six skiers have been rescued alive following a significant avalanche incident, while nine others remain missing, prompting a large-scale search operation. The incident occurred at Frog Lake in the Castle Peak area, located northwest of Lake Tahoe. The rescue efforts were hampered by severe winter conditions, delaying the arrival of search and rescue teams to the stranded skiers. Once located, the skiers were safely evacuated and assessed by the Truckee Fire Department.
Ashley Quadros, a spokesperson for the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that two of the rescued skiers required hospital treatment. The search for the missing individuals is ongoing, with updates expected at a scheduled news conference on Wednesday. The skiers were part of a group on a three-day skiing expedition, navigating challenging terrain and covering a distance of up to four miles while carrying their supplies.
The authorities were alerted to the avalanche by Blackbird Mountain Guides, the tour company leading the expedition, as well as emergency beacons carried by the skiers. Due to the risk of additional avalanches, rescuers proceeded cautiously to the avalanche site. Blackbird Mountain Guides is collaborating closely with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue teams to support the ongoing rescue efforts. The group involved in the incident had been staying at Frog Lake huts since February 15 and was returning from their trip when the avalanche occurred.
