NASA’s upcoming Artemis 2 mission is causing concern among scientists due to potential issues with the capsule that will transport astronauts to the Moon. The crew, consisting of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, could begin their 10-day journey as early as April 1. They will board the small 11ft x 16.5ft Orion capsule, which will launch on NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
One particular worry revolves around the safety of Orion’s heat shield, as it could expose the astronauts to extremely high temperatures during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. Dr. Ed Macaulay from Queen Mary University of London expressed concerns about the heat shield’s performance, noting that during the Artemis I mission, significant material loss occurred due to heat exposure.
The unexpected damage to Orion’s heat shield during the unmanned Artemis I test in 2022 raised red flags, as the shield’s material, Avcoat, did not perform as expected. Dr. Macaulay highlighted the uneven ablation of the shield, making re-entry thermal load modeling unpredictable and potentially exposing the capsule to dangerous heat levels.
Despite these challenges, NASA has opted to proceed with the same heat shield for Artemis II, making adjustments to the mission approach. A more direct re-entry model will be implemented to reduce time spent at high temperatures, aiming to prevent gas buildup that could damage the shield. Dr. Macaulay emphasized that this approach will subject the crew to increased deceleration during re-entry.
