In a heartwarming tale of resilience, three-year-old elephant Bani, who miraculously survived a tragic accident that left her paralyzed, is now striding confidently in custom-made faux leather boots. The young elephant’s journey began when she and her mother were struck by a train, resulting in her mother’s unfortunate death. With only a 2% chance of survival, Bani was transported from the accident site in India to the pioneering elephant hospital in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, supported by Wildlife SOS charity.
Today, flaunting her specially crafted boots that require three to five days to produce, Bani’s remarkable recovery has astounded experts. Linda Whiteley, a spokesperson for Wildlife SOS UK, expressed, “Bani is a true miracle. Two years ago, she arrived severely injured and in critical condition, with doubts about her ability to walk again. Despite the forest rangers’ grim prognosis, she defied the odds. Bani’s mother’s selfless act of shielding her during the accident symbolizes unconditional love, and now, with the dedicated care she has received, Bani has been granted a new lease on life.”
Geeta Seshamani, Wildlife SOS’s Co-Founder & Secretary, highlighted the crucial role of specially designed protective boots in aiding Bani’s mobility. These boots prevent further injuries as she still exhibits a slight limp, ensuring her feet are safeguarded. Bani’s progress, a pioneering case globally, offers hope not only for injured elephants but also for animals facing seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Bani’s recovery journey involved an array of treatments, including physiotherapy, Ayurvedic oil massages, laser therapy, and more, orchestrated by a team of international veterinary experts. Her gradual improvement, from being immobile due to trauma-induced spastic paraparesis to regaining independent movement, showcases the dedication and innovation employed in her rehabilitation.
Today, thanks to her resilient spirit and the support of her caretakers, Bani roams freely at India’s first Elephant Hospital in Agra. Wildlife SOS CEO Kartick Satyanarayan commended the veterinary team’s efforts, emphasizing the meticulous process of designing protective footwear tailored to Bani’s needs. The faux leather boots, with soft gel padding and Velcro fastenings for comfort and stability, are essential for her daily activities.
While Bani’s injuries prevent her return to the wild, she enjoys an enriched life under expert care at Wildlife SOS.
