“Reviving Tradition: How a Family Dinner Circle Reconnected Generations”

Date:

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around family dinners shared on a small beige mat. As the sun would set, casting a warm glow, we would savor delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated in a circle, we would pass plates, exchange stories, and recount the day’s highlights. This tradition, passed down by my father from his upbringing in Lahore, connected us as a family and celebrated our cultural roots.

Over the years, our busy schedules led to a lapse in these family gatherings. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23, I decided to revive this tradition. Inviting friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to join us, we recreated the circle on the floor, sharing a meal of Thanksgiving turkey. The experience resonated with my friends, with one likening it to sitting around a campfire.

This simple act of togetherness bridged the gap between my heritage traditions and Canadian customs. Encouraged by the Thanksgiving dinner’s success, my father decided to resurrect the tradition permanently. Now, we prioritize dinner time as a sacred moment to set aside individual concerns and truly connect as a family, whether on the woven mat or around the dining table. This practice not only strengthens our familial bonds but also honors our cultural legacy for generations to come.
