A tragic incident occurred as a skilled rock climber lost his life in a 66ft fall from a mountain. Will Stanhope sustained a severe head injury while attempting the popular Rutabaga route on Stawamus Chief mountain in Canada.
Following the fall, the 39-year-old climber was taken to a hospital in stable condition but unfortunately passed away ten days later on April 23. His family shared the heartbreaking news of his demise, citing the severe head injury from the Rutabaga route as the cause.
Describing Will as a courageous and passionate individual with a remarkable memory and sense of humor, his family emphasized his deep connection to rock climbing and the climbing community. They expressed gratitude to those who shared in his adventures and memories.
A celebration of Will’s life is planned for the spring in Squamish. The BC Emergency Health Services responded to the incident on April 13, where the climber, known for his free solo climbing, was located in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada.
Throughout his life, Will was associated with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
