While many struggle with resetting household clocks, spare a thought for three Royal Family employees who manually adjusted over 1,600 timepieces this weekend as the clocks moved forward by an hour to mark the start of British Summer Time (BST).
A team of horological conservators dedicated their weekend to updating the timepieces across royal residences, including 450 at Windsor Castle, 350 at Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace in London, and 50 at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
These historic timepieces, part of the Royal Collection, are considered some of the finest and most significant items within the palaces, featuring musical clocks, astronomical clocks, and miniature clocks. Notable pieces include the Anne Boleyn Clock, gifted by Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn in 1532, and Queen Charlotte’s watch, an early example of the lever escapement mechanism.
As the clocks adjusted at 1am on March 30, they are set to revert back by an hour at 2am on October 25, according to reports.
