King Charles III swatted a fly while Queen Camilla burst into laughter upon receiving a large knitted radish during one of their final public appearances before the summer recess. The royal couple attended the Sandringham Flower Show, a historic event held on the royal estate in Norfolk for almost 150 years. This year marked the first time the show was organized by the Royal Horticultural Society, of which the King is a patron.
The monarch participated in the creation of a new ‘RHS Legacy Garden’ showcasing his enduring love for gardening, local Norfolk materials, and a commitment to promoting rural skills and biodiversity. Arriving in a horse-drawn carriage to cheers from the crowd, Their Majesties toured the event alongside RHS President Keith Weed and director general Clare Matterson.
Amidst meeting and greeting the public, King Charles III expressed delight at viewing the garden he collaborated on with Catherine Macdonald, exuding a rustic charm. The couple engaged with enthusiastic gardeners along the route, exchanging pleasantries and laughter. Camilla received a thoughtful gift of insect repellents, which could have come in handy during the fly incident.
During the show, the King presented The Kings Biodiversity Award and The Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquee Award, while the Queen awarded The Queen’s Choice of Upcycled Containers Award and a special recognition to Ingoldisthorpe Church of England Primary School. Interacting with children and exhibitors, the royal couple shared light-hearted moments before departing in their carriage.
With one more official engagement ahead before their summer retreat to Scotland, the RHS Sandringham Flower Show stands out as the first RHS Show hosted at a Royal residence, upholding the RHS tradition of showcasing expert growers, charities, and communities.
