Recently, I had the privilege of attending an event for the launch of a new publication titled Monarchy and Democracy: A History of Leadership. During a panel discussion with royal journalist colleagues, we delved into the changing role of the monarch and how King Charles and Prince William are positioned to guide the institution forward.
Examining the monarch’s evolving influence over time, we see a shift from direct political power to a more subtle “soft power” approach, leveraging symbolism, relationships, and public visibility for impact.
A notable example of this soft power was observed during the State Visit of the King and Queen to the United States, where the royal couple’s presence sparked both anticipation and controversy, ultimately culminating in a successful diplomatic engagement.
In the past century, the British monarchy has transitioned from a more active political role to one of ceremonial significance, with formal powers largely yielding to ministerial guidance.
Amidst public scrutiny and internal family strife, the monarchy has faced questions about its relevance in the modern era. The recent public rifts, particularly involving the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Prince Andrew, have raised doubts about the institution’s future.
Despite these challenges, King Charles remains committed to upholding a moral standard and ensuring transparency within the royal family. His actions, especially in response to his brother’s scandal, reflect a dedication to ethical governance.
As the monarchy continues to adapt, Prince William stands ready to embrace change and lead the institution in the future, building on the foundation laid by his predecessors.
