Russian drone attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding areas continued for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, causing disruptions with air raid sirens sounding almost non-stop. The latest attacks on Monday resulted in injuries to four individuals and damage to various facilities in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Governor Tymur Tkachenko on Telegram.
The ongoing drone assaults, many of which are jet-powered, have inflicted casualties, destroyed homes, and disrupted daily life in Kyiv and nearby regions. A significant incident occurred when a Russian drone strike hit an ammunition depot, triggering explosions that claimed the lives of 38 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy remarked on Sunday that the relentless drone attacks were aimed at wearing down the Ukrainian population. Zelenskiy disclosed that Russia had launched close to 1,500 drones towards Ukraine within a span of four days, with over half of them being jet-powered.
Additionally, a Russian drone strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by private courier Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, as confirmed by Governor Oleh Kiper on Monday. In Kryvyi Rih in the southeast, an industrial business was targeted by a jet-powered drone, resulting in injuries to two individuals, according to a local official.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated attacks on economic targets lately, focusing on major e-commerce companies and retailers. Russia has specifically targeted warehouses belonging to prominent Ukrainian supermarket chains, leading postal services, and home-goods stores. In retaliation, Ukraine also launched a drone strike on a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg, as revealed by the local governor on Monday.
Russia has ramped up its air attacks, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited interceptors capable of defending against ballistic missiles. The increased use of daytime drone attacks has disrupted daily routines in Kyiv, including halting metro services and causing delays for commuters.
During the alerts, passengers, including individuals like nurse and psychologist Yulianna Oliynyk, found themselves stranded on metro platforms, waiting for services to resume. Oliynyk, accompanied by her two sons, faced challenges reaching their destination due to the air raid alerts disrupting their plans.
The relentless drone attacks have left residents like Oliynyk pondering uncertain situations, with some contemplating spending nights in metro stations due to the ongoing disruptions.
