A Russian hardline politician has expressed significant concerns about the possibility of a conflict between Russia and Europe. Alexei Zhuravlev, the first deputy chairman of Russia’s defense committee, stated in an interview with News.ru that the likelihood of war with Europe is high. He emphasized that Europeans are strategically using Ukraine to tie down Russian forces and strengthen their own military capabilities.
Zhuravlev highlighted Germany’s rapid military developments, including the deployment of the 45th Armored Brigade to Lithuania as part of NATO’s defensive measures against potential Russian aggression. He pointed out that Europe’s actions, such as blockading Kaliningrad and planning to disrupt Russia’s tanker fleet, are escalating tensions.
Despite acknowledging that Europe may not desire a war, Zhuravlev emphasized that they are not afraid of it. He criticized European leaders for what he perceives as a lack of historical understanding and readiness to confront Russia. Additionally, he claimed that the number of Ukrainian military casualties is significantly higher than official figures suggest, with estimates exceeding one million.
According to Zhuravlev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed since the conflict began in February 2022. However, independent sources estimate much higher casualties on both sides, with Russian forces reportedly suffering around 1.2 million casualties. The actual death toll is expected to be higher than reported due to undercounting of battlefield deaths.
The situation remains tense as geopolitical tensions continue to rise between Russia and Europe, with concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region.
