In response, Iran has launched attacks across the Gulf, escalating the hostilities. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer has pledged to permit the use of UK bases for defensive purposes to protect allies in the region.
Despite Spain’s refusal to grant authorization to the US for offensive military operations from its bases, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticized the unilateral military actions against Iran. However, Spain’s strategic significance as a NATO member remains unchanged.

Furthermore, island territories such as the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands, known for their natural isolation and popular with British holidaymakers, could serve as secure retreats, potentially making them less attractive targets for aggression.
However, individuals on these islands would need access to supplies and a level of self-sufficiency. Telecinco in Spain has indicated that the overall risk level for the nation’s territory is low to moderate.
In a hypothetical scenario, locations with critical infrastructure, such as military bases and nuclear facilities, would be at higher risk, according to analysis by Alfonso Egea on the show El Tiempo Justo. Intelligence reports suggest that areas with less crucial infrastructure, like the Navarran Pyrenees, Huesca, and parts near Galicia, would be safer.
Similarly, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands have been identified as additional secure zones in the event of an emergency.
