A dedicated employee at Sainsbury’s, who had recently assisted in saving a colleague’s life, was dismissed from his job after intervening to stop a thief at the store. Gary MacArthur, a shop assistant with 15 years of service, took action when a criminal attempted to steal high-end champagne and turned violent by throwing glass bottles. Despite his efforts to protect the store and its customers, Mr. MacArthur was let go by the company.
The incident occurred at the West Wickham branch in south London, where the thief exploited a security gap to carry out the theft. Mr. MacArthur, recognizing the repeat offender, decided to confront and remove the individual from the premises. Subsequently, he discovered a bag containing suspected stolen items nearby, which he returned to the store’s stockroom.
As the situation escalated with the thief breaking bottles and becoming aggressive, Mr. MacArthur, along with a customer, managed to restrain the perpetrator until the police arrived. However, despite his actions, Mr. MacArthur was terminated for gross misconduct as he did not adhere to the company’s guidelines on handling such incidents.
Mr. MacArthur’s attempts to appeal the decision were unsuccessful, leading to his dismissal from a job he cherished. This incident follows a similar case where a long-serving Morrisons manager was also sacked for confronting a violent shoplifter. The increased occurrences of violence and theft in stores have prompted Sainsbury’s to emphasize the safety of their staff and customers by avoiding direct confrontations with offenders.
In response to the incident, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson highlighted the rising challenges of violence, aggression, and theft in their stores, emphasizing the need to prioritize safety and prevent escalations. The company is investing in additional security measures, collaborating with authorities, and providing guidance to employees to ensure a safer shopping environment for everyone.
