Seven Afghan nationals and refugees are facing charges related to rape and child sex abuse in Norwich, as confirmed by Norfolk Police. The allegations involve group-based child sexual exploitation spanning from August 2023 to May 2025, with the individuals accused of being part of a grooming gang. They are scheduled to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court soon.
The arrests of these men were made following a coordinated police operation that targeted seven locations, six in Norwich and one in Dumbarton, Scotland. Additionally, an eighth suspect, a 19-year-old man, was apprehended in Ireland after 7 am on Friday. Legal procedures will be undertaken to secure his return to the UK.
The charges pertain to two victims who were teenagers at the time of the reported incidents. It was clarified by the authorities that none of the accused resided in asylum hotels in Norfolk, and the alleged offenses did not occur at such establishments.
Detective Superintendent Stacey Murray, leading the investigation, emphasized the focus on the victims’ safety and well-being. The investigative team is dedicated to meticulously examining all leads and evidence while being sensitive to the victims’ experiences.
Superintendent Craig Miller acknowledged the distressing nature of the case and assured the community of efforts to safeguard children from abuse. The Phoenix Project has been initiated to enhance existing support mechanisms for at-risk children, involving collaboration among law enforcement, children’s services, and healthcare personnel.
