“Shabana Mahmood to Introduce ‘British FBI’ for Crime Crackdown”

Date:

Shabana Mahmood is gearing up to introduce a new law enforcement agency dubbed the “British FBI” aimed at combatting serious criminal activities, fraud, and terrorism. The Home Secretary is preparing to reveal a cutting-edge police force dedicated to apprehending the most dangerous criminals in the UK. It is argued that the current resources of the 43 police forces across England and Wales are strained in their efforts to dismantle both national and international criminal networks.

The proposed establishment of the National Police Service by Ms. Mahmood is expected to enable chief constables to concentrate on local crimes like anti-social behavior, drug trafficking, and theft. Additionally, the comprehensive reforms will include the introduction of Regional Crime Hubs to target criminals involved in cross-border and highly intricate criminal activities.

In her statement, Ms. Mahmood emphasized that the existing policing framework is ill-equipped to combat modern-day sophisticated crimes such as fraud, online child exploitation, and organized crime syndicates. By creating a new National Police Service, equipped with top-tier talent and cutting-edge technology, the goal is to apprehend dangerous criminals, allowing local forces to focus more on community crime prevention efforts.

The upcoming nationwide bureau, as per the Home Office, will amalgamate the capabilities of various law enforcement agencies such as the National Crime Agency, Counter Terrorism Policing, Regional Organized Crime Units, police aviation units, and National Road Policing. This integrated approach will prioritize tackling complex crimes using shared technology and intelligence under the leadership of a National Police Commissioner.

Former head of counter-terrorism policing, Neil Basu, commended the initiative, highlighting the potential for enhanced coordination among multiple agencies, systems, and decision-making bodies to create a more effective national security system combating major crimes, organized crime, and terrorism.

Ms. Mahmood is expected to address Members of Parliament on the fragmented nature of policing, citing the current division of responsibilities among different police forces. The new organization will streamline duties, ensuring optimal technology utilization, including the deployment of facial recognition cameras.

The Home Secretary is scheduled to unveil her strategy for crime prevention, marking what the Home Office describes as the most significant reform in policing since its inception two centuries ago.
