Skate Canada made an announcement on Wednesday regarding the resignation of Mike Slipchuk as the high-performance director post the 2026-27 season, marking the completion of his 20-year tenure in the position. Slipchuk became part of the Skate Canada team in 2006, overseeing a period where Canadian figure skaters achieved significant success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
During Slipchuk’s leadership, Canada clinched four Olympic medals at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, notably with ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and the team event skaters achieving gold. Virtue and Moir’s gold medal made them the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals to their credit.
Despite recent Olympic challenges with no medals in Beijing 2022 and only one bronze medal garnered by Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance at Milan Cortina earlier this year, Canada has consistently produced world champions across various disciplines over the past two decades. Noteworthy achievements include Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011-2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals.
The latest world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024. Skate Canada has disclosed that Slipchuk will continue in an advisory capacity post his resignation to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director.
