Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Advocates for Women in Somalia

Date:

Sophie, known as the Duchess of Edinburgh, has embarked on a significant international mission representing the UK’s Foreign Office. This comes as the Royal Family deals with the aftermath of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s recent arrest.

During a two-day visit to Somalia to commemorate International Women’s Day, Sophie focused on two important issues close to her heart. She visited Mogadishu to advocate for the role of women in peacebuilding in post-conflict areas and to ensure justice for sexual and gender-based violence survivors. Sophie met with women who had endured conflict-related sexual violence, including victims of atrocities committed by the al-Shabaab terror group.

Additionally, she learned about the challenges faced by Somali soldiers’ wives due to the absence of their husbands who are engaged in combat. Sophie’s visit included a poignant stop at a Mogadishu hospital providing UK-supported sexual and reproductive health services to women affected by violence.

Reflecting on the harrowing experiences of Somali women subjected to female genital mutilation, rape, and sexual assault, Sophie acknowledged the emotional toll of addressing such distressing issues in her advocacy work.

After concluding her trip to Somalia, Sophie continued her regional tour. Meanwhile, her husband, Prince Edward, had to withdraw from a major event due to a sudden illness, missing a significant gathering of royals at St James’ Palace where Prince Charles presented awards.

Efforts to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of succession gained momentum as New Zealand joined Australia in supporting the UK government’s potential move. Discussions on changing the succession order are expected to follow the completion of police investigations into Andrew’s alleged misconduct, requiring parliamentary action and agreement among the British realms.

By aligning with the UK Government’s position, New Zealand affirmed its readiness to back the proposal to remove Andrew from the line of succession pending the investigation’s conclusion.
