The headteacher who had been at the helm of Stretford Grammar School for 17 years tragically passed away in a road accident, confirmed by Greater Manchester Police. The incident occurred on Sunday evening when a car collided with a male cyclist on Paddock Lane in Partington around 6 pm. Despite immediate emergency response, the cyclist, identified as 56-year-old Michael Mullins, succumbed to his injuries.
Following the tragic event, the school closed its doors on Tuesday, with deputy headteacher Liz Baxter informing parents of the devastating news. Mr. Mullins was reportedly on his way home when the collision took place. The school’s website announced its closure, citing unforeseen circumstances and promising further updates later in the day.
In an official statement, Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit appealed for information regarding the incident. The collision, involving the cyclist and a car, occurred at the junction of Paddock Lane, Warburton Lane, and Dunham Road in Altrincham. Four arrests have been made in connection with the incident, with three men and one woman detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The cyclist, a man in his 50s, received immediate treatment at the scene but unfortunately did not survive. The police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the incident to come forward.
