“Summer Travel Alert: Check Passport for EU Rule Changes”

Date:

Before embarking on your summer vacation, remember to review your passport thoroughly. Failure to comply with the ‘three month’ passport rule could jeopardize your holiday plans.

Since the UK’s departure from the EU in 2020, British passport holders are now considered ‘third country nationals’, leading to significant changes in entry requirements. Many travelers are still unaware of these adjustments.

When traveling to EU member states, your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years. If your passport predates 2016, it’s time for a renewal. Additionally, your passport must have at least three months’ validity beyond your planned departure from the EU country you are visiting.

To avoid being denied entry, ensure that your passport meets these criteria. For instance, if you plan to return on May 31, your passport should be valid until at least August 2026. Passports issued after 2018 are typically valid for 10 years, unlike older ones that could have additional months carried over from the previous passport.

British tourists are now limited to a 90-day stay within any six-month period in Schengen countries post-Brexit. Previously, there were no such restrictions.

Rules differ for non-European destinations. For example, when traveling to Thailand, your passport must have a validity of six months from your arrival date. Similar requirements apply to countries like Australia, China, Indonesia, and India.
