Allegations have surfaced regarding orchestrated killings for organ harvesting in the global hub of the practice, survivors have disclosed. Criminal groups have established an extensive network that funnels body parts to government-sanctioned transplant facilities.
Organ harvesting has been a persistent issue in China, where an estimated 100,000 transplants are conducted annually. While many transplants involve willing participants enrolled in government-run programs, there have been longstanding accusations of forcibly harvesting organs from prisoners, a lucrative practice generating billions of dollars yearly.
Former inmates claiming to be victims of organ harvesting have come forward, recounting being rendered unconscious only to awaken with vital organs missing. One survivor, known as Cheng, revealed a harrowing experience where he was forcibly taken to a hospital, waking up post-surgery with a significant incision and parts of his lung and liver removed.
Cheng, detained in 2002 for advocating against the suppression of the Falun Gong movement, described being restrained by guards and administered an unknown substance before undergoing surgery without consent. Recalling the ordeal, he detailed waking up in a hospital bed with tubes and experiencing alarming post-operative symptoms.
Despite official denial by Chinese authorities, reports suggest deaths in custody and widespread forced organ harvesting, particularly targeting Falun Gong practitioners. The China Tribunal’s 2020 findings indicated an ongoing and systematic practice of forced organ removals from detainees.
The International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse in China has highlighted the lack of scrutiny surrounding China’s rapid organ transplant availability, raising ethical concerns about the sourcing of organs and the apparent disregard for the origins by recipients.
The organization emphasized the ethical implications of the stark contrast between the lengthy waitlists in most countries and China’s immediate access to organs, urging for a closer examination of the sources to address the ongoing challenges in the organ transplant industry.
