An individual has been taken into custody by the Secret Service following an incident with a “suspicious vehicle” in the vicinity of the White House today.
Authorities cordoned off streets near the residence of US President Donald Trump this morning after a vehicle reportedly crashed into the White House gates.
Street closures and traffic delays occurred around the White House early in the morning before 7AM, as per CBS reporter Natalie Brand, due to an investigation by the Secret Service.
A spokesperson mentioned that they are investigating a suspicious vehicle and confirmed that the driver has been apprehended for questioning.
CBS journalist Sara Cook reported that a vehicle collided with the White House gate, prompting the Secret Service’s swift response.
Senior White House reporter Jennifer Jacobs observed temporary street closures and an increased presence of law enforcement officials around the White House due to the suspicious vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle has been detained and is undergoing questioning by the US Secret Service.
The incident took place at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and H Street, Northwest, near the perimeter of the presidential estate.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington DC stated that a van breached a security barricade near the White House, according to ABC7 News.
At around 6:37 AM, the MPD responded to a call near the White House to support the United States Secret Service after the van drove through a barricade at Connecticut Avenue and H Street, Northwest.
Authorities confirmed no injuries and the driver’s apprehension. Local reports indicated that police temporarily closed several nearby streets for the ongoing investigation.
Photos from the scene depicted personnel in military attire and a significant police presence with multiple officers on-site.
Anthony Guglielmi, the Chief of Communications for the Secret Service, informed reporters that the driver is in custody and undergoing questioning.
