Teacher Dismissed for Attending Course Amid Illness

Date:

A teaching assistant, who was absent from work due to illness, faced scrutiny for attending a prestigious football training course he had been previously denied permission to attend, as disclosed in a professional standards hearing.

The incident involved Jamie Harris, a staff member at Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bridgend, who was discovered attending the UEFA A license course despite not having official leave approval. Harris, although devastated by his dismissal, contested an accusation of dishonesty but acknowledged a lack of integrity in his initial response.

During the hearing held by the Education Workforce Council in Wales, it was revealed that Mr. Harris had persistently applied for three years before securing a spot in the sought-after course in Newport that attracts participants nationwide.

Despite being on sick leave from June 3 to June 17, 2024, due to personal stress, Mr. Harris, a University of South Wales graduate and a football enthusiast, managed to fund the £3,500 course fee after already completing UEFA B and C licenses. Notably, the elite UEFA A license course has been completed by renowned figures like Thierry Henry.

Expressing his excitement for being accepted into the competitive course, Mr. Harris, who had previously coached for various football clubs and institutions, believed the training would enhance his abilities in working with children with learning needs.

Mr. Harris explained that his sick leave coincided with a challenging personal period, and attending the course was encouraged by his family as a means to cope with his situation. Despite his employer rejecting his request for unpaid leave, Harris maintained that he was genuinely unwell during his absence and asserted that his actions were not influenced by the denied leave request.

Upon his return to work, Mr. Harris was confronted by the headteacher about his attendance at the course during sick leave, leading to his dismissal. While admitting to initial dishonesty in his response, Mr. Harris eventually provided a full account of the situation but emphasized his genuine need for the training.

The hearing is ongoing as Mr. Harris continues to present his case, shedding light on his commitment to professional development and his dedication to his role as a sports development officer at Woodlands special school in Cardiff.
