Majd Alshagnobi, a 15-year-old survivor from Gaza, is undergoing remarkable facial reconstruction surgeries in the UK after sustaining severe injuries from Israeli tank shell explosions. The teenager lost part of his face, his jaw, and all his teeth in the incident. Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated NHS surgeon, Majd has regained his smile through a series of operations at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London.
Having arrived in the UK last July, Majd expressed gratitude for the treatment he has received, stating that his condition has significantly improved. He hopes that other children from Gaza will also have the opportunity to receive medical care abroad, similar to his own experience.
Majd’s journey to the UK for treatment was made possible by Project Pure Hope, a charity supporting child victims of conflict. While Majd’s progress is heartening, there are still thousands of children in Gaza awaiting life-saving operations. Dr. Omar Abdel-Mannan, a key figure in facilitating medical evacuations, emphasized the urgent need for continued support for these children.
The UK government, in collaboration with healthcare partners, has facilitated the evacuation of 50 children from Gaza for medical treatment. However, there are calls for increased aid and medical supplies to reach Gaza, following the recent ceasefire.
The conflict in Gaza, which began with a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, has resulted in devastating casualties, including over 20,000 children. The Israeli military has acknowledged a significant number of Palestinian fatalities during the war. Despite the challenges, efforts like Majd’s treatment symbolize hope and highlight the ongoing need for international support for those affected by the conflict.
