Teen on Electric Bike Kills Great-Grandmother

Date:

A court heard that a teenager struck and killed an 86-year-old pensioner on a pedestrian crossing while riding his electric bike at high speed and talking on his mobile phone. Billy Stokoe, 19, admitted to causing the death of Gloria Stephenson, a great grandmother, in Sunderland last May. Gloria, described as “beautiful” and “intelligent,” was walking with her daughter and grandson when the tragic incident occurred.

Stokoe, who was reportedly on a phone call at the time and had consumed a cannabis compound, pleaded guilty to the charges. The court proceedings faced delays, causing distress to Gloria’s family, who expressed their frustration over the justice system’s pace. Gloria, a vibrant and active individual, was out for a walk with her daughter’s dog when the accident happened.

Despite efforts to save her, Gloria succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her family emphasized her zest for life and the positive impact she had on those around her. Witnesses testified that Stokoe was speeding and using his mobile phone before the collision, which was captured on dashcam footage. Prosecutors highlighted the severity of the offense, noting that causing death by dangerous driving carries a maximum sentence of up to 18 years.

Gloria’s family mourned her loss and emphasized her vitality and love for life. They thanked everyone who provided support during the tragic event. The family seeks justice for Gloria and hopes that her death will prevent similar incidents in the future.
