A 16-year-old boy allegedly stabbed nine-year-old Aria Thorpe in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, leading to her death. The incident took place in December last year, with the teenager reportedly googling “What happens if you kill” shortly after the stabbing. He confessed to a group at a nearby railway station that he had stabbed a child, claiming it was an accident while playing with a large knife.
According to witness accounts, the boy admitted to the group that he had unintentionally killed someone and expressed confusion about his actions. He later explained to the police that he had impulsively stabbed Aria in the chest with a big knife, causing her to fall to the ground before he left the scene.
The teenager, whose identity is protected by law, is facing charges of murder and manslaughter but denies any criminal responsibility for Aria’s death. The prosecution alleges that he jabbed the knife at Aria with the intention to scare her, but she moved towards him and sustained a fatal wound.
A post mortem examination revealed that Aria died swiftly from a single stab wound to the chest. The court also learned that the defendant had a significant reliance on his mobile phone, which he considered crucial for communication and freedom. Analysis of his phone usage showed minimal sleep the night before the incident.
The defendant maintains that Aria’s death was an unfortunate accident and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial, overseen by Mrs. Justice O’Farrell, is ongoing to determine the outcome of the case.
