A court heard that a teenager’s purportedly friendly Snapchat acquaintance turned out to be a nightmare for parents as he was sentenced to jail. Benjamin Mitchell, 19, manipulated his victim on Snapchat, eventually coercing her into sending explicit videos of herself. He admitted to disturbing desires involving children and was described by the schoolgirl as self-centered. The online relationship between Mitchell and the 15-year-old girl lasted four months, during which he pressured her into sharing indecent material regularly.
The abuse came to light when the girl confided in her mother about the situation. Mitchell was found to possess indecent images of young girls and admitted his attraction to children. His criminal history included a previous conviction related to child indecency. Described as vulnerable due to his autism and ADHD, Mitchell was sentenced to four years in prison plus an extended license period.
The judge highlighted Mitchell’s predatory behavior, referencing his obsession with children and weapons. Mitchell’s emotional manipulation and exploitation of the young girl were emphasized, leading to significant harm despite no physical contact. Despite Mitchell’s conditions, the judge emphasized his responsibility and control over his actions. Mitchell was sentenced to at least two-thirds of his term behind bars, with additional preventative measures imposed upon his release.
