Three teenagers who carried out a fatal attack on a man they suspected of being a paedophile were reprimanded by a lawyer for their unacceptable brutality. Kate Blumgart KC, the prosecutor for the youths, emphasized that it was not their role to take matters into their own hands, even if they believed the man, Alexander Cashford, had engaged in sexual misconduct with minors. Despite the man giving his number to a girl at an amusement arcade, he had not broken any laws.
The 16-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy, and another 16-year-old boy enticed Mr. Cashford to a beach in Kent, where they assaulted him with rocks and a bottle, leading to his death from more than 30 external injuries. The girl and the 15-year-old boy were found guilty of manslaughter, while the 16-year-old boy had previously pleaded guilty to the same charge. The jury acquitted all three of murder charges.
During the trial, Ms. Blumgart made a poignant statement to the defendants, highlighting that their actions were not a reflection of the novel “Lord of the Flies,” where a group of boys descends into savagery on a deserted island. She emphasized that the court was not a place for moral judgments or vigilante justice.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kimber from Kent Police clarified that Mr. Cashford had not violated the law in his interactions with the girl, as the legal age of consent is 16. He stressed that the incident was assessed based on evidence and legal principles, not moral interpretations.
The boys, whose identities are protected due to their age, communicated with Mr. Cashford under a false name and arranged to meet him near the seafront. The 16-year-old boy trailed Mr. Cashford for a considerable distance while the girl accompanied him, leading to the fatal confrontation captured in a distressing video on a mobile phone.
The sentencing for the three defendants is scheduled for April, as reported by the Press Association.
