Tesco has announced a significant revamp of its stores across the UK, offering greater savings at the checkout. The supermarket giant will introduce its popular Aldi Price Match program to over 2,000 Express convenience stores, allowing customers to buy everyday essentials at prices matching those of Aldi.
This expansion represents the most extensive change to the scheme since its launch in May 2020 to address the increasing cost of living in the UK. Approximately 200 items, including basics like pasta, milk, lettuce, and tuna, will be included in the price match initiative at Tesco Express locations. Customers can identify matched products by looking for the distinctive Aldi Price Match logo in-store.
Ashwin Prasad, Tesco UK CEO, stated that the scheme’s extension aims to assist shoppers facing financial strain. He emphasized the commitment to offering affordable prices for the weekly food shop to Tesco customers through various store formats.
This cost-saving initiative by Tesco comes at a critical time, with recent research revealing that three million UK households are resorting to meal-skipping due to financial pressures. A survey by Which? showed that 85% of UK adults are now concerned about food prices, up from 83% in February, indicating a growing worry about living expenses.
The study highlighted that two-thirds of households have adjusted their shopping or eating habits in the last month to reduce food expenses. Common adjustments include purchasing cheaper items, opting for supermarket budget-range products, and taking advantage of promotions.
Alarmingly, the research found that 15% of UK households are going without certain foods, while one in ten households (equivalent to three million) are skipping meals to manage their weekly grocery costs.
