“Toronto Woman Shares Journey as Autistic Brother’s Caregiver”

Date:

Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shared her experience of becoming her older brother’s primary caregiver after the loss of their mother. Navigating the responsibilities of caring for her neurodivergent sibling, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, has presented both rewarding moments and challenges.

Despite Stuart’s unique needs, including assistance with daily activities due to his stroke and sensitivity to loud noises, Simone cherishes the companionship they share. Reflecting on past experiences of feeling embarrassed by her brother’s autism, Simone now understands the importance of acceptance and support for neurodivergent individuals.

Acknowledging her own struggles with ADHD, Simone recognizes the need to manage her tendencies to avoid triggering her brother’s emotional outbursts. Through their shared living arrangement, she has learned to appreciate the value of communication and mutual respect in creating a harmonious environment for both siblings.

While adjusting her lifestyle to accommodate Stuart’s needs, Simone remains committed to their relationship, prioritizing their well-being over personal pursuits. Embracing this second chance to strengthen their bond, she is dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive space for their unique family dynamic.
